Milgard vs. Pella Windows: Lines, Warranties and Fit

Milgard and Pella both sell vinyl and fiberglass windows, so unlike many brand match-ups this one can be compared like for like. Pella adds wood; Milgard adds aluminum. The biggest differences are in how each is sold and how each warranty handles labor.

Milgard is a Western manufacturer that most California window contractors can supply. Pella is a national brand with its own showrooms. Both are credible choices. This page, part of our California window guide, compares what each publishes about its products and warranties so you can line up the right two products. For our own Milgard work, see Milgard windows from Heritage Exteriors.

The companies

Milgard was founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958 and says its windows and patio doors are found throughout the western United States through a network of Milgard Certified Dealers. It has been part of MITER Brands since 2019.

Pella traces its start to 1925, when Pete and Lucille Kuyper invested in a retractable window screen company, which moved to Pella, Iowa in 1926, where it is still based. Pella reports more than 200 showrooms, and says its products have also been sold through home improvement centers, including Lowe's, since 1993.

Three things follow from the table.

How each is sold, and why it matters

With windows, the channel is part of the product.

Milgard sells through independent dealers. The dealer or contractor measures, orders and installs, and gives you a workmanship warranty of its own. Milgard's factory service then stands behind the product within its service territory. Milgard also appears in some big-box installed programs.

Pella sells through Pella-branded showrooms and sales branches and through retailers. When you buy an installed job directly from a Pella sales branch, Pella has a separate Installation Limited Warranty and Service Agreement that covers the installation, distinct from the product warranty. If you buy Pella windows through a retailer or an independent contractor, the installation warranty is whatever that seller provides.

So before comparing prices, find out for each quote: who is the contracting party, who physically installs, and whose installation warranty you get. Our sibling guides on big-box installation versus a local contractor and California window contract requirements explain what must be on the contract.

Warranty terms, as published

Both companies use the word "lifetime," and in both cases it describes coverage for the original buyer while they own and live in the home. The details differ in ways that matter.

Milgard's optional upgrade

Milgard's Full Lifetime Warranty, the one with glass breakage coverage and all labor included, is now an optional upgrade for the V400 Tuscany, V300 Trinsic and C700 series. It has to be purchased at the time of the original sale and appear on Milgard's order documents, it is not available everywhere, and it cannot be transferred. If your decision turns on that coverage, make sure it is named on the quote.

Pella's wood warranty

Pella's wood products have their own document. For an owner-occupied single-family home it provides a non-transferable limited lifetime warranty on basic coverage, which includes wood deterioration, and on non-laminated glass. Labor is covered for two years. For other properties and later owners, basic coverage runs 10 years from the original sale. Coverage of exterior cladding paint is written for "nonseacoast" environments, defined as more than two miles from a coastal seashore, with separate seacoast finish terms.

Conditions in both

Our sibling guides explain these terms in general: window warranties explained and how to make a warranty claim.

Energy performance

Both brands sell glass packages that meet California's requirement for replacement windows and some that do not, depending on configuration. The prescriptive maximum U-factor is 0.27 in Sacramento, the Bay Area, the Central Valley and the Sierra, and 0.30 in much of Southern California, with a solar heat gain limit of 0.23 in most zones. See what Title 24 requires.

National brands publish national marketing. A package described as high performance for a cold-climate market may admit more solar heat than a Central Valley house wants. Ask each bidder for the NFRC figures of the exact unit, and read how to read an NFRC label and the best energy-efficient windows for Sacramento.

Features to compare on the sample

Marketing pages highlight different things: Pella promotes integrated blinds and shades on its Lifestyle Series and screen and operator features on its vinyl and fiberglass lines; Milgard emphasizes frame profiles and color options such as black capstock on its upper vinyl series. Rather than relying on either list, ask to handle a corner sample and an operating unit of the exact line, and check:

Which suits which house

For current installed cost ranges, see window replacement cost in Sacramento and the Bay Area, and use how to compare window replacement quotes to put the bids on one list. Our Bay Area window companies page covers how to vet the installer.

Service after the sale

Milgard handles claims itself. Its warranty page says Milgard factory-trained technicians carry out covered repairs, and owners file through its service request page or phone line within 30 days of noticing a problem, quoting the sales order number printed between the panes. Skilled labor is included for 10 years only inside Milgard's service territory.

Pella service runs through the channel you bought from. If you bought an installed job from a Pella sales branch, its Installation Limited Warranty and Service Agreement applies alongside the product warranty. If you bought through a retailer, start with the retailer. After the two-year labor period the part may be covered while the labor is not, so ask in advance what a service visit costs.

Neither company makes a claim easy if you cannot show what you bought and when. In both cases, register the product, keep the contract and invoice, and note the order numbers. Our sibling guide on warranty claims lists what each company asks for.

Questions to put to each bidder

  1. Which line is this, and what is the frame material?
  2. Which warranty document applies, and may I have a copy before signing?
  3. For Milgard, is the Full Lifetime upgrade on this order? For Pella, who provides the installation warranty: Pella or the seller?
  4. What are the NFRC U-factor and SHGC for this exact configuration, and do they meet the figure for my climate zone?
  5. Is this a retrofit or a full-frame installation?
  6. Who pulls the permit? See permits for retrofit windows in California.
  7. After the manufacturer's labor coverage ends, what do you charge to fit a warranty part?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Pella line compares with Milgard Tuscany?

On material and positioning, Pella's 250 Series is its mainstream vinyl line and the closest counterpart to Milgard's V400 Tuscany and V300 Trinsic. Pella also sells a vinyl line called Encompass by Pella. A fair comparison uses the same operating style, the same size, and each brand's glass package that meets your climate zone, and then looks at certified figures, frame width, color options and warranty terms.

Does Pella make a fiberglass window?

Yes. Pella's fiberglass line is called Impervia. Milgard's fiberglass line is the C700 Series. Fiberglass frames are stiffer and more dimensionally stable than vinyl and can be made in slimmer sections, which is why both companies position them above their vinyl lines. Each has its own warranty document, so read the fiberglass one specifically if that is what you are buying.

How long is labor covered under each warranty?

Under Milgard's current replacement warranty, Milgard provides skilled labor for claims made within 10 years of the manufacture date if the home is in its service territory. Under Pella's vinyl and wood warranties, the cost of labor is included only within two years of the date of sale. Under Milgard's optional Full Lifetime upgrade, all labor is included for the original owner-occupant. These are the manufacturers' terms; your installer's workmanship warranty is separate.

Can I buy Pella windows from any contractor?

Pella sells through its own network of showrooms and sales branches and through home improvement retailers including Lowe's, and some of its lines are limited to particular channels. Pella states, for example, that its Reserve Traditional line is available only through local Pella showrooms. Milgard sells through independent Milgard Certified Dealers. The channel affects who installs the window and who you call first with a problem.

Does either warranty cover a home near the ocean?

Both apply, with limits you should read. Pella's wood warranty treats homes within two miles of a coastal seashore as seacoast environments and handles exterior paint coverage differently there. Pella's vinyl warranty excludes damage from corrosive elements. Milgard's warranty excludes corrosion and abnormal environments apart from a one-year term on stainless steel hardware. Rinsing frames and hardware with fresh water is the owner's job on any brand.

Is there anything unusual in the fine print?

Both documents contain dispute-resolution terms. Pella's includes an arbitration agreement and class-action waiver, with a stated way to opt out within 90 days of purchase. Milgard's limits claims to individual actions. Neither is unusual for the industry, but opt-out windows are short, so read that section when you sign rather than when something goes wrong.
