Home Depot and Lowe's both sell windows with installation. The store is the seller; the installation is carried out by local installers working under the store's program. That arrangement has real advantages and a few things to pin down. Here is how it compares with hiring a window contractor directly.
Get a Free EstimateBuying windows through a home improvement store is appealing for obvious reasons: you know the name, the showroom is ten minutes away, and there is a corporation behind the transaction. Buying from a local window contractor is appealing for different ones. This page, part of our California window guide, lays out how the store programs work as the stores describe them, and what to ask whichever way you go.
We are a local contractor, so we are one of the two options here. We have kept the description of the store programs to what Home Depot and Lowe's publish.
Home Depot's window installation service starts with a free consultation, either in your home or by video. The company says a consultation typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes and includes measuring the openings, reviewing options, and receiving a quote covering material, permit, labor and installation costs, along with financing options. It describes two installation methods, pocket (insert) installation into an existing frame and full-frame installation.
On who does the work, Home Depot says: "All of our Service Providers are local, licensed, insured and undergo a thorough background screening process." Its licensing notice says license or registration numbers are held by or on behalf of Home Depot U.S.A., Inc., and it lists a California license number among them.
On brands, Home Depot says it installs windows from Andersen, Simonton, Ply Gem, Jeld-Wen, Milgard and ProtecSure by PGT, with availability varying by region.
On warranty: "We back our installation services with a limited installation warranty. Your windows will also come with a manufacturer's product warranty. Ask your consultant or a store associate for details."
Lowe's describes its installation services as available through professional independent installers who are licensed, insured and background checked, and says its installation work is backed by a one-year labor warranty, with the manufacturer's warranty on the goods passing to the customer. Program terms change, so confirm these points on the written quote you receive. Pella says its products have been sold through home improvement centers including Lowe's since 1993, so a Lowe's window program is one route to that brand; see our sibling comparison of Milgard and Pella.
Every installed window job has two warranties, wherever you buy it.
Most problems that show up in the first few years, such as leaks, drafts and sashes that bind, are installation problems. So the length and clarity of the installation warranty matters at least as much as the product warranty's headline.
With a store program there are three parties: the retailer, the installing company and the manufacturer. That is not a defect in the model, but it does mean you should know in advance who to call for what, and get the installation warranty document rather than a description of it. With a local contractor there are two parties, and the same question applies. Our sibling guides cover this in depth: window warranties explained and how to make a window warranty claim.
One more point from current manufacturer documents: some warranty features have to be selected at the time of order. Milgard's Full Lifetime Warranty with glass breakage coverage, for example, is now an optional upgrade that must be purchased with the original order and appear on the order documents. Whoever is selling you the window, ask which manufacturer warranty the quote includes.
A store program adds a layer between you and the crew. The sale, the measure, the order and the installation may be handled by different people, coordinated through the store's project system. For a straightforward job that works well. Where it can be slower is when something changes: a unit arrives damaged, rot is found in an opening, or you want to alter the scope. Then the request has to travel through the program.
A local contractor is typically one office. The person who measured may be the person who orders and the person you call. That is an advantage when the job is complicated, and no advantage at all if the contractor is disorganized.
Questions that surface the difference with either seller:
Our sibling guides on the window replacement timeline and the installation inspection checklist describe what a well-run job looks like.
California regulates home improvement contracts the same way regardless of who the seller is. Before signing with a store or a contractor:
Our sibling guide on California window contract requirements covers each of these, and licensing and insurance requirements for exterior contractors explains what the license record shows. If a dispute cannot be resolved, the board accepts complaints against licensees, generally within four years of the act complained of; it investigates and can discipline a license, but its process is not a way to obtain compensation.
Replacement windows generally need a building permit in California, and the permit is where compliance with the Energy Code is checked. Home Depot's description of its quote includes permit costs, which is the right way to do it. With any seller, confirm three things in writing:
National programs use national product catalogs. A package that qualifies elsewhere may not meet the figure for your zone, so ask for the NFRC numbers for the exact units; how to read an NFRC label shows where they are. Our permit guide covers the process.
Store programs offer a defined set of brands and lines, chosen for the program. That covers most needs on a typical house. A local window contractor can usually source a wider spread: several vinyl makers, fiberglass, thermally broken aluminum, clad wood and special shapes.
The house matters as much as the product. California houses raise questions a standard program may or may not be set up for:
Ask any bidder how they would handle your specific wall, and listen for a specific answer.
| Big-box installed program | Local window contractor | |
|---|---|---|
| You contract with | The retailer | The contractor |
| Who installs | A local service provider or independent installer assigned by the retailer | The contractor's employees or subcontractors |
| Product range | The program's brands and lines; varies by region | Whatever the contractor carries; often broader |
| Installation warranty | The program's written terms | The contractor's written terms |
| Product warranty | The manufacturer | The manufacturer |
| Backing | A national retailer | A local business; check license, bond and insurance |
| Financing | Store credit programs | Varies |
| Best suited to | Standard replacement jobs where the program's products fit | Jobs needing a particular product, wall detail or coordination with other exterior work |
Get a quote from each, for the same scope. Then compare line by line, not total by total: the product line and glass package, the installation method, trim and finish work, the permit, disposal, and the two warranties. How to compare window replacement quotes gives you the list, and our cost page gives installed ranges for context.
A store program is a reasonable choice when its products suit the house, the installation warranty is in writing and long enough for you, and you are comfortable with the program handling communication. A local contractor is a reasonable choice when you want to choose the product freely, the house has details that need judgment, or you want to deal directly with the people doing the work. In both cases the outcome depends on the installing crew, so ask who they are. Our Sacramento window companies page lists what to check.
When you hire us you contract directly with the licensed company doing the job: we measure, order, pull the permit as part of the work, and we are who you call for service afterward. We will quote the same scope as a store proposal so you can compare product, method and warranty item by item. Licensed in California, CSLB #1055919. Call (916) 546-2991.
Do Home Depot and Lowe's employees install the windows?
Not according to how the stores describe their programs. Home Depot says its installations are performed by local service providers that are licensed, insured and background screened. Lowe's describes its installation services as available through professional independent installers who are licensed, insured and background checked. In both cases you contract with the retailer and a local company does the work. Ask which company will be assigned to your job.
Who is the licensed contractor on a big-box window job in California?
Read the contract: California requires a home improvement contract to state the contractor's name, business address and license number. Home Depot publishes a California contractor license number on its installation pages and says license numbers are held by or on behalf of Home Depot U.S.A., Inc. Look up the number on your contract on the Contractors State License Board website, and ask for the installing company's license number too.
How long is the installation warranted?
Home Depot's window installation page says it backs installation with a limited installation warranty and that the windows carry the manufacturer's product warranty, and it tells customers to ask for details. Lowe's states that its installation work is backed by a one-year labor warranty. Terms can vary by program and change over time, so get the written warranty for your job before signing and compare its length with what local contractors offer.
Is a big-box store cheaper than a local contractor?
We do not publish price comparisons between named companies. Sometimes the store is lower and sometimes it is not, and the two quotes often cover different products and scopes. Promotions and store financing can change the picture as well. The only reliable method is to rebuild each quote onto the same list: product line, glass package, installation method, trim work, permit, disposal and warranties.
Can I buy windows at the store and hire my own installer?
Yes. Both stores sell windows without installation. Be careful with sizing: a replacement window has to be measured for the specific opening and installation method, and a stock size that is close will not do. If a contractor is installing, it is usually better for the contractor to measure and order, so that one party is responsible if a unit does not fit.
What if something goes wrong after a big-box installation?
Start with the store's installation services department, in writing, since the store is the party you contracted with. Product defects go through the manufacturer's warranty, which the store or installer can usually help start. If a licensed contractor's work is the problem and it is not resolved, the Contractors State License Board accepts complaints against the license on the contract, generally within four years of the work.

Heritage Exteriors is beyond exceptional. Very impressed with the timeliness, communication, and reasonable price of the whole project.
Heritage replaced my old crumbling wood siding and did a fantastic job. From the first interactions assessing the project and providing a quote, to the project itself, was all exceptional. My home looks brand new.
We recently had our house re-sided with Hardie product. We interviewed 3 companies, one of them being Heritage Exteriors. From our first meeting with David to the last day's work touching up paint, the experience was excellent.
